Notes on research project 'Shifting the gaze – Other Talk'
By Lisa Ahenkona, JOLIEN DE BRAEKELEER & Kevin Smets; 2020-2022
This project focused on media representations of migration from the perspective of migrants themselves. Conceived as an applied action research, the aim was to contribute to more humane and nuanced media representations and to formulate recommendations for a variety of stakeholders such as media makers, social workers, teachers or scholars.
In a first phase we surveyed experts on their needs regarding this issue as well as existing initiatives. In a second phase we developed a participatory research process together with undocumented migrants in Brussels. This resulted in a short video on their covid-19 lockdown experiences as well as a report and a booklet collecting visual walks with the participants (see below).
The research as carried out with the support of 11.11.11, Vluchtelingenwerking Vlaanderen and Samenlevingsopbouw Brussel and is part of the large-scale program Other Talk.
Researchers: Jolien De Braekeleer (project phase 1) and Lisa Ahenkona (project phase 2).
