(De)bordering imaginations: “reel” power struggles in a bordered world
WITH KEVIN SMETS
Professor and Echo co-director Kevin Smets talks about the first results from the different Reel Borders substudies and reflects upon tensions between materiality, imagination and bordering. The seminar convenors are Professor Susanne Kuechler and Dr Shireen Walton.
ABOUT THE REEL BORDERS PROJECT

This project aims to deepen the understanding about borderspaces through the holsitic lens of cinema, including questions of belonging, identity and imagination. Reel Borders is a five-year project funded by the European Research Council and studies how for the past 120 years film has been used to imagine borders in diverse ways. Current research centres around three different borderlands, namely the Irish border, the Spanish-Moroccan border and its Ceuta and Melilla exclaves, and the Turkish-Syrian border.
