MARCH - MAY 2023; University of Melbourne

Our Ph.D. fellow, Giacomo Toffano, recently completed a two-month research trip to Australia. During his time at the University of Melbourne, Giacomo served as a visiting scholar in the Art Faculty.
Under the guidance of Prof. Papastergiadis, Giacomo's research focused on the intermedial nature of refugee essay films. During the stay, he completed an article examining formal experimentation in three refugee films, specifically exploring their attempts to employ intermedial strategies to counter prevailing depictions of migrant im/mobilities.
On campus, he had access to the Archives and Special Collections (ASC), a significant repository of Refugee and Migration maps and video material. Accessing these new resources was crucial to gather raw data and expand the analyzed corpus of his research.
Furthermore, Giacomo had the opportunity to present his article in a public lecture entitled "Hybrid Aesthetics of Standby." The lecture took place at the Research Unit on Public Culture (RUPC) within the university campus. Collaborating with the RUPC, a highly esteemed unit in the study of cultural hybridity, provided Giacomo with a valuable platform for sharing his research. The trip was funded by the FWO (Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek – Vlaanderen) Long Stay abroad V421923N.
