The paper 'Populism of the Privileged: On the Use of Underdog Identities by Comparatively Privileged Groups', co-authored by ECHO's co-director prof. dr. Benjamin De Cleen, has been selected as winner of The 2024 Harrison Prize by the editors of Political Studies, Sage.
As per the jury's report, Benjamin's work was voted the best paper published in Political Studies in 2024: '"Populism of the Privileged" makes a significant contribution to what is a very-well developed field of study by redirecting the analysis of populism to the role of privilege and elites. By pinpointing attention to the distinctions and overlaps between populism "by", "with" and "for" the privileged, the article enables an appreciation of the varieties of populism and their impact on democracy. The work has clear and important repercussions beyond the field as societies around the globe grapple with increasing stronghold of populist politics.'
We are delighted to congratulate Benjamin on this achievement.
