Reason and Engage is an interdisciplinary course at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel that aims to encourage critical reflection and societal engagement. Free inquiry, civic engagement, responsibility, engaged science, interdisciplinarity and sustainability are central. This course aims to encourage critical reflection on important social issues. Each year, the course explores one central theme whereby theoretical knowledge is linked to society.
The first inaugural lecture will be held on the 3rd of October by Julie ("Jules") Netherland, PhD and explores drug policy. Netherland focuses on the critical study of drugs, medicine, science and addiction. She has published over a dozen peer-reviewed journal articles, including, "White Opioids: Pharmaceutical Race and The War on Drugs that Wasn’t," (with Helena Hansen), in Biosocieties.
