Irene Gutiérrez
Biography
Irene Gutiérrez-Torres is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and Doctor cum laude in Media and Communication Studies from Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. Her films and research explore bordering dynamics through collaborative and participatory filmmaking, with a particular focus on mobility, geopolitical tensions, and the ethics of (self-)representation.
As director and producer, her filmography includes 'Border Diaries' (2013), 'Hotel Nueva Isla' (2014), 'Connected Walls' (2015),' Exile Diaries' (2019), and 'Between Dog and Wolf' (2020). More recently, she produced 'The Travellers' (Les Voyageurs, 2025), directed by David Bingong.
Her films have been screened and recognised at major international festivals and art venues, including the Berlinale, IDFA, BFI London Film Festival, IFFR Rotterdam, Visions du Réel, and MoMA’s Documentary Fortnight.
She is currently Assistant Coordinator of the IMISCOE Arts, Culture and Migration Standing Committee and YECREA Representative of the ECREA Film Studies Section. She is affiliated with the research groups BIRMM and ECHO (VUB), and TECMERIN (UC3M).
