Gender Discourse and Transphobia in Pakistan’s Digital SpherE

PhD fellow Fatima Zahid Ali, reflects on how the banning, and then limited release, of the award-winning movie ‘Joyland’ has affected the historic khawajasira community in Pakistan. In a blog post for the LSE South Asia Centre, Fatima focusses on Pakistani khwajasira (transgender) activists and adresses the political nature of social media language through a postcolonial lens. The analysis, grounded in concepts of language appropriation and abrogation, is conducted with a multimodal discourse analysis.
